Guardian Angels Training

Guardian Angels Educational Programs take many forms. Some are designed to be integrated into the existing GA programs, while others are designed to be taught to civilians as a community service.

Some of our training for safety patrol includes:

GA Martial Arts/Self Defense
First Aid/CPR
Urban Skills

Please contact your nearest local chapter for additional information on how to attend these training classes.

Martial Arts Training

A true warrior is not some violent thug who abuses their skills to hurt others, but a highly disciplined and trained person with a strong moral code and a deep respect for others. A true warrior uses force only as a last resort, when defending themselves or those in need. The Guardian Angel training focuses on developing true warrior spirit in the members. Our close quarter combat and physical intervention training teaches streetwise self-defense skills that have been developed through real life conflict situations. Our techniques are easy to learn and require no previous skill, knowledge or experience and are effective for all shapes and sizes.

The technical part of our training concentrates on street style wrestling and grappling, with the addition of close range striking. Classes are made up from a mixture of techniques and drills adapted from a number of martial art systems such as: the Japanese grappling arts of aikido, jujitsu and judo, the Chinese art of wing-chun kung fu, western wrestling, Brazilian jujitsu, muay thia kickboxing, and the Filipino art of kali. There are a number of training drills that are unique to the Guardian Angels and we only teach what has worked well during real life situations on the streets.

A large part of the Guardian Angel physical training program is our scenario / role-play training. This is where we make up a variety of mock situations that may happen on the street and volunteers then deal with them. Of course they have no idea what the situation may be when they come into the training hall. Situations that are role-played are as mild as verbal abuse to as violent as a fight that comes rolling out of a bar and into the street. The volunteers get an excellent opportunity to deal with these types of situations and many more, and then have it broken down for them as to see what was done well and what needs improving on.

Safety is a top priority in Guardian Angel training and we are not impressed with overly aggressive types of behavior. Machismo and machisma are poor qualities in a true warrior. People join the Guardian Angels for many reasons and getting injured in training is not one of them. To become a Guardian Angel you do not need to be Bruce Lee or his sister nor do you need to be Rambo or Rambina. A positive attitude, a willingness to learn and a desire to help others are the qualities that we are looking for.

First Aid/CPR

Our volunteers provide first aid to hundreds of citizens each year and are qualified in Standard First Aid and Adult CPR.

We have been providing first aid stations at special events, festivals and parades for many years. We have even assisted in many major catastrophes: Mexico City Earthquake 1985, Puerto Rico Oil Spill 1994, San Francisco Earthquake, Florida Hurricane Andrew 1992, Reno Floods 1997, Los Angeles Earthquakes, Puerto Rico Hurricane Hugo 1990.

The biggest part of our first aid effort lies in the streets of many major cities. We believe that as long as we live up to our motto "We Dare To Care" that the call will be answered without hesitation.

The Guardian Angels will continue to train and update their skills in order to provide the best services to the public. We are proud of our volunteers for giving their time, dedication, and compassion, but most of all for putting themselves on the front line and showing our communities that a little help goes a long way.

Urban Survival Skills

A little known fact to the public is that the Guardian Angels put an equal amount of time into non-physical training, if not more, as they do physical training. These other components help us to develop well-rounded volunteers who can handle more situations without getting physically involved as well as learning new skills that can be utilized in their personal relationships at home, work or school.

Communication is an integral part of Guardian Angel training and volunteers have an opportunity to develop skills in mediation, negotiation, problem solving, and decision making. These are the skills that are required to become a great leader in the Guardian Angels or anywhere else and they can be taught and learned.

Imagine how many people would like to become better public speakers. Our members get excellent hands on experience and learn how to speak publicly on a topic that they have a genuine passion for. Speaking to students in all age brackets gives our members and opportunity to fine tune their techniques and develop an ability to speak to groups as small as 10 people to as large as 300 people or more. A variety of engagements keep speakers on their toes and they find themselves doing Safety Workshops, Guardian Angel History, Volunteerism, Gangs and Violence and many other topics. We are so often called upon to attend community meetings and are asked to show how the residents can make communities safer. These types of engagements are an excellent way to becoming a great public speaker and better communicator.

Operating in the front line headquarters helps volunteers learn new skills in radio communications, administration, public relations and community service projects. There is a wonderful chance to exercise writing and design abilities by preparing newsletters, flyers, safety literature, press releases, and even wanted posters.

The Alliance of Guardian Angels provides many services in our communities and will continue to train our volunteers with innovative and fun exercises. We believe that everyone should be given the opportunity to become a Guardian Angel and we will always be more than willing to train them.
